With him she travelled through Soviet Union and China. In 1916 David-Neel met the young Sikkimese monk Aphur Yongden, who became her lifelong traveling companion, and whom she would later adopt. Born in France, she was attracted by Buddhist theories as a youth and began making trips to India and North Africa.
She was the first woman to visit the city of Lhasa, Tibet, in 1924, forbidden to foreigners at the time.
